Thinking about bringing your dog to your engagement session or couples photoshoot? DO IT. As an Oregon engagement photographer, some of my favorite sessions are the ones where you bring your furry family member along.
But to make sure your session is relaxed, fun, and turns out exactly how you’ve envisioned, here are my top tips for including your dog in your couples photos.
Bring a Friend to Help with Your Dog
One of the best ways to ensure your dog engagement photos go smoothly is to have a friend or family member come along. They can hold the leash and watch your dog when we’re capturing intimate shots of just the two of you. It makes it so much easier to focus on being in the moment together, knowing your pup is safe and happy nearby.
Make Sure Dogs Are Allowed at Your Photoshoot Location
Not every photoshoot location is dog-friendly. Always double-check if your location allows pets before you bring your dog to your engagement photoshoot. I can always help with this! If you’re not sure where to go, I’m always happy to recommend gorgeous spots around Oregon that are perfect for couples photos with your dog.
Book a Session with a Little Extra Time
When you include your dog in your engagement or couples session, it’s always a good idea to book a little more time than you might normally. That way there’s plenty of space to take breaks, let your dog get comfortable, and allow everyone to settle in without feeling rushed. More time means less stress — and more room for those candid, playful moments that truly show your connection (and your pup’s personality).
Be Prepared for a Little Chaos — and a Lot of Joy
Whether your dog is playful and energetic or calm and cuddly, let’s embrace it. I’ve photographed dogs digging in the sand during Oregon coast engagement sessions, swimming in the river, and sitting proudly in golden meadows. Your photos will feel more authentic (and memorable) when your dog just gets to be a dog.
Pack the Essentials for Your Dog
When planning dog engagement photos, make sure to pack:
Poop bags — because accidents happen and we want to keep the location clean.
Water and a portable bowl — especially if it’s warm or we’ll be walking a lot.
Favorite treats or a toy — these are lifesavers for getting your dog’s attention and bringing out those adorable head tilts.
Let Your Dog’s Personality Shine
Remember: your dog isn’t expected to sit still and smile at the camera the entire time (how boring would that be anyway?). Some of the best moments in engagement photos with your dog come when they’re giving kisses, running around, or even photobombing you. It’s these genuine moments that capture the real connection and fun you share as a family.
Why Bring Your Dog to Your Couples Photoshoot?
Including your dog in your engagement or couples photos makes your session even more personal and meaningful. After all, they’re a huge part of your everyday life. So why not have them there to celebrate this chapter of your love story too?
